As the world’s largest science fair – and the only global science competition for high-school level students – Intel ISEF represents the summit of high school science fairs.
Intel ISEF finalists are selected annually from more than 550 ISEF-affiliated fairs around the world. Each ISEF-affiliated fair can send its top two individual projects and one team project to Intel ISEF. Finalists’ projects often address issues that have stumped scientists for years – and which could very well lead to major scientific breakthroughs. In fact, more than 20% of the young scientists who competed at Intel ISEF 2007 either had a patent or had applied for a patent for their work. Projects represent a wide range of scientific disciplines, and are judged in the following categories:

Society for Science & the Public (formerly Science Service), a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., has administered the ISEF since its inception in 1950. Since Intel became the title sponsor of the ISEF in 1996, the total number of finalists has grown 40%, and the number of participating countries, regions, and territories has grown 70% – to more than 50 countries.
